About the System

A medicine supply chain refers to the chain from the supply end to the demand end. Generally speaking, it includes pharmaceutical enterprises, wholesalers, retailers (medical institutions and pharmacies) and consumers. Driven by the demand, pharmaceutical enterprises complete their own work and cooperate with each other. As a result, the value of the supply chain is unceasingly increased through cash flow, logistics, service flow and information flow, which benefits enterprises related to the pharmaceuticals industry. Timely and effectively monitoring, controlling and tracking the supply chain are essential to ensure safe, economical, lean and efficient circulation of medicines. The Internet of Things (IoT) allows people to track the unique ID of a drug so as to timely collect and share accurate medicine information. Therefore, it is necessary to research on how to manage the medicine supply chain with the IoT.

System Function

1. Pharmaceutical enterprises

A disposable RFID tag is a carrier with the type, batch number, shelf life, wholesaler and other information of a drug in the EPC data area. It is attached on medicine packing during packaging. The tag also uploads the information to the system server to establish the basic database for the medicine, which makes it easier for the personnel to query information.

Read a tag with a fixed reader during warehousing and dispatching. Then, upload the RFID data and warehousing/dispatching information into the system data server. The system server of the management center classifies the data according to their types for statistics purposes, displays real-time information about inventory, location, dispatching, etc., and promotes warehouse management. Personnel may check medicines in storage with portable readers.

2. Wholesalers

Wholesalers read tags with fixed/portable readers and then put the medicines into warehouses according to the dispatch bills provided by pharmaceutical enterprises. The warehousing information should be checked against the delivery information provided by the producers. Then, the data should be uploaded into the system database server if they are consistent. In case of inconsistency, contact the producers for correction.

Take out medicines according to order forms and upload the information and quantity of such medicines into the system database server of the management center, update inventory information and generate dispatch files; the dispatch files (dispatch bills) should be sent to the purchasers (wholesalers or retailers) with the medicines and be checked.

3. Retailers

Retailers read tags with portable readers according to the dispatch bills provided by the wholesalers and check such information against the dispatch bills. Then, the data should be uploaded into the server of the management center if they are consistent. In case of inconsistency, contact the wholesalers for correction and upload checking information and corrective actions into the same server.

Sell the medicines required by consumers and upload the medicine information, quantity and consumer information into the aforesaid server to generate dispatch files.

4. Consumers

When receiving the medicines, consumers may read the tags with portable readers or smart phones, and check the information against the dispatch bills provided by the retailers, and query and confirm such information in the management center server.

1. Combat fake drugs and provide drug safety monitoring

Tags on the packing help to combat fake drugs, regulate the drug market and boost enterprises' competitiveness.

2. Prevent sales in unauthorized areas

Wholesalers may sell medicines in unauthorized areas, which could undermine the profits of pharmaceutical enterprises. With the system, users can obtain real-time location of medicines. As a result, the unauthorized sales can be prevented.

3. Promote management over warehousing and logistics

The system reduces labor demand and unnecessary inventory while makes logistics more efficient.

4. Provide information feedback

Through the system, producers can timely obtain sales of medicines and market conditions, and thus can promptly prepare effective products plans.
